Monday Miscellany

1. Glee comes back on this week--yay! Foz re-ran the pilot this past week and I'm even more in love with this show now than I was a few months ago, if that's possible. GLEE!

2. I just started a five year journal (which is where you write a sentence or two about what happened today on a page, and then come back on the same day the next year and do it again). I've only been doing it for a few days, so it's boring now; I wonder if it will be more interesting next year, or the year after that.

3. I have a new favorite song, this one (stupid music companies disabling the embed). This girl (Fefe Dobson) is like the love child of Joan Jett, Rihanna, Green Day, and Kelly Clarkson, in other words...awesome.

4. Also awesome, this old commercial for Pets.com, which I saw on YouTube while I was looking for the Fefe Dobson thing:



WOOO OOOOH OOOOOOOO, baby, please don't go!

5. Disturbia is a pretty good modern take on Rear Window, and I totally understand why people thought that Shia LaBeouf was going to be a big deal based on this movie. It's unfortunate that his choices subsequent to Disturbia were I Can't Believe We Waited Twenty Years For This*, followed by Unwatchable Movie About Toys You Enjoyed When You Were A Child, and Unwatchable Movie 2.**

Hard to beat Peter Cetera and Chicago back in the day, isn't it? Oh, people make fun of them all the time but they churned out one great song after another for many years.

Funny you mention Disturbia. Saw it the other night on basic cable and actually got sucked into it. Sure, it's basically a remake but it's still well done and satisfying. I thought Shia did a good job but you're right, his subsequent choices leave something to be desired. I hope he grows up a bit and picks better movie roles.

I'm afraid to even watch Glee. No particular reason but whenever folks say "you HAVE to watch this," I immediately think "Do I really have to watch this?" For example, I've seen about five minutes of The Sopranos over the years. Eh, no big deal, if you ask me. I'll tell you what . . . you can watch Glee and enjoy the heck out of it and I won't watch Glee and it won't bother you at all, OK? Sound good to you?

Of course, if you INSIST that I watch Glee, then you're going to have to watch something I want you to watch . . .

On Mary Sue

I recently read a Very Popular Book in a Very Popular Series, which I was going to talk about here until I read the second book in the series and realized--OH NO--that the main character of the book is a total Mary Sue. sigh. For those of you who didn't spend time in the fanfic world, a Mary Sue is a character who everyone else loves. Jay Is Not On Vacation

Despite my absence from this blog, I am not dead and/or on a beach somewhere. I wish I were (on a beach, not dead), but I am not. I would sing a song about how busy I am with work (true), and how busy I am with teaching (also true), and how busy I am with working on the new projects (true dat), and how busy I am with life in general (double true), but the real reason why I haven't been posting here is because I've been querying. For some reason, querying has made me especially leery of posting here. I've seen posts from agent blogs that talk about how they don't want to know that the author they're considering representing has been rejected by everyone else in the world. Likewise, I don't think it's good form for me to post about the responses I've received when the agents haven't given me permission to do so, although some writers do it. Why Are The Characters Friends?

Lately, I've been reading a lot of books where the main character and her best friend don't get along. This is confusing to me. Why is the main character friends with someone she dislikes, or is afraid of, or actually hates? I get that it happens--I've seen Mean Girls . I've read Queen Bees and Wannabes . Heck, I'm old enough to have been the prime audience for Heathers . But in order for this fractured best friend relationship to be convincing, it has to be set up. In both Heathers and Mean Girls , there's a reason why the protagonist is friends with a bunch of b*tches--she chose to be. She knows that they're jerks. In fact, she can feel herself becoming a jerk right along with them. It's part of the character arc, the point of the story, that being friends with these girls is not who she really is. But the relationships I've been seeing lately don't make that kind of sense. The protagonist doesn't have a reason to be friends with...
